Fried Bread

We grew up making this Fried Bread recipe.  You can eat it plain or with honey or powdered sugar or jam.  This is the quick version for fried bread (with baking powder).  If you are interested in the yeast version follow this link (I got that yummy fry bread/scones recipe from my sister-in-law).

Fried Bread
4 cups sifted flour
1½ tsp. salt
3 tsp. baking powder
3 Tb. sugar
1¼ cups milk
2 Tb. shortening

Combine dry ingredients. Mix in shortening and add milk (add more milk if needed, but don't make the dough too sticky). Knead until smooth and elastic. Roll into 8 thin circles. Deep fry. Eat with jam. Also can eat with meat, cheese, salsa, or other toppings.

Tiffany's Notes: You can also top fried bread with taco toppings for a Navajo Taco.  I seem to remember my mom also using this as a quick pizza dough.
Fried Bread topped with seasoned meat, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, salsa, and sour cream.

This is a great treat to make for a western or cowboy or pioneer themed party.  The pioneers crossing the American plains could mix up a simple batch of dough and fry it up over a fire in a dutch oven or other cast iron pot.

July is the month when we celebrate Pioneer Day {July 24}!  We'll be posting several authentic pioneer recipes this month.
